Tenerife compared
South or North?
One island, two characters: sun, rock and sea on one side; laurel forest, a sea of clouds and old towns on the other. See both and Tenerife finally makes sense.
01
Mount Teide splits the island
Three things that explain the difference – widely known facts, not a weather promise.
Teide is the highest mountain in Spain and shapes the weather of the whole island.
It brings clouds mostly to the north coast – the south sits in the lee and is usually drier.
A cloud layer often sits over the north; drive up Teide and you may stand above it in the sun.
02
South and north side by side
Typical tendencies – weather varies and exceptions are everywhere.
| ☀ South | 🌿 North | |
|---|---|---|
| Climate | drier, sunnier, few clouds | greener, more changeable, clouds and cooler more often |
| Landscape | volcanic rock, cliffs, semi-desert | laurel forest, terraces, vineyards, steep coast |
| Sea & beach | swimming beaches and promenades; El Médano for wind and kitesurfing | black sand, lava rock pools, rougher sea |
| Towns | resorts, harbours and marinas | historic towns like La Laguna, La Orotava, Garachico |
| Food | fresh fish in harbour towns | guachinches, wine growing, home cooking |
| Suits | sun, boat, short distances | hiking, culture, nature, calm |
