San Cristóbal de La Laguna

Colonial streets, squares and churches – the island's former capital with a university feel.

Ideal for a relaxed half day, even under cloudy skies.

What to expect

San Cristóbal de La Laguna, the former capital of the island, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999. Its grid layout later served as a model for colonial towns in the Americas. The old town has mansions with wooden balconies, the cathedral, the church of Nuestra Señora de la Concepción with its tower and the lively Plaza del Adelantado. The university brings a young crowd, cafés and tapas bars.

Weather and best time

It is often cooler and cloudier here than on the coast, sometimes with drizzle – a light jacket is a good idea. That makes La Laguna a good plan for a day with changeable weather. In September the big festival in honour of the Cristo de La Laguna takes place, when the town is especially busy.

Getting there and practical

The old town is largely pedestrianised and easy to explore on foot. The tram (Tranvía) connects La Laguna directly with Santa Cruz, and Tenerife North airport is close by. If you come by car, it is best to park in a car park on the edge.

Tips and notes

Plan two to three hours for a stroll, plus time for museums, churches and a break in one of the cafés. La Laguna combines well with the Anaga mountains, which begin only a few kilometres away. Opening hours change, so check before your visit.
