Teide National Park
A lunar landscape above 2,000 m and Spain's highest mountain at over 3,700 m. Especially striking at sunrise and under the stars.
A permit is required for the final summit trail – check current rules with the national park before you go.
What to expect
At 3,715 metres, Teide is the highest mountain in Spain and shapes the whole island. The national park around the volcano is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most visited national parks in Europe. Inside the old caldera, known as Las Cañadas, lava fields alternate with coloured rocks such as Los Azulejos and the famous Roques de García with the Roque Cinchado. On a clear day you can see the other Canary Islands.
Weather and best time
Above 2,000 metres it is clearly cooler than on the coast, often windy, and the sun is strong. In winter there can be snow and roads are sometimes closed. Sunrise and the night sky are especially impressive because the air is very clear; above the sea of trade-wind clouds the sun often shines even when the coast is overcast.
Getting there and practical
The park can be reached by car on several roads from the north and the south; the roads are winding but well built. The cable car runs to just below the summit, usually to around 3,500 metres. The final climb to the crater needs a free permit from the park authority; the number is limited, so apply early. The cable car stays closed in strong wind.
Tips and notes
Always pack warm layers, sun protection, a hat and enough water, even in summer. At this altitude you may get headaches or dizziness – walk slowly and take breaks. Rocks and plants must not be taken away, marked trails must not be left, and drones are not allowed without a permit. Check time slots and rules with the official bodies before you travel.
