El Médano

A relaxed southern coastal town known for wind- and kitesurfing and the red volcanic cone Montaña Roja.

Windy – great for sport, less so for calm beach days.

What to expect

El Médano in the south-east is a relaxed coastal town on a wide bay with a light sandy beach. It is famous for its steady wind, which attracts windsurfers and kitesurfers from all over the world; international competitions are held here too. Behind it rises Montaña Roja, a red volcanic cone in a nature reserve that can be climbed on a short hike. Further south lie natural beaches such as Playa de la Tejita.

Weather and best time

The wind blows almost daily, especially in summer, which makes it a water sports spot but can feel a little rough for sunbathers. The region is sunny and dry, and calima can leave dust in the air. The water temperature is pleasant, a little cooler in winter.

Getting there and practical

El Médano is only a few minutes from Tenerife South airport and is easy to reach by car, taxi or bus. Parking near the beach is limited and the town fills up at weekends. Water sports schools rent equipment and offer courses for beginners and advanced riders.

Tips and notes

For windsurfing and kitesurfing observe the zones and rules and book courses with licensed schools. Climb Montaña Roja in the morning if you can, take plenty of water in the heat and stay on the paths in the nature reserve. Small fish restaurants right on the beach invite you to eat; the evenings are quiet and family-friendly.
