Living in Tenerife

Anyone thinking about a property on the island asks about daily life first: weather, doctors, school, journeys. Here is an orientation that sells nothing.

Why Tenerife works in everyday life

Six reasons people give when they stay. A personal view is no substitute for a conversation on the spot.

Climate

Mild in winter, usually dry and sunny in the south, greener and fresher in the north. If you do not miss the change of seasons, it is a calm year without extremes.

Nature

From the Teide volcano to the laurel forest of Anaga, high mountains, coast and forest lie close together. A weekend is enough for a different landscape.

Health

There are public and private clinics, specialists and pharmacies, mainly around Santa Cruz and in the tourist centres. What care looks like for you depends on where you live and your insurance.

Education

Besides public schools there are international and German-language options, and the university in La Laguna. Each school decides places, fees and admission.

Connections

Two airports, ferries to the neighbouring islands and a dense road network. Flights to central Europe are a question of timetable; check them for your travel times.

Way of life

An open society, many nationalities, markets, festivals and long evenings outdoors. A little Spanish makes offices and neighbours much easier.

Three ways to use Tenerife

No yield promises, just a way of thinking: how should the property fit into your life? Figures depend on location, property, occupancy, tax and rules, and are checked case by case.

A home for the family

You live on the island full time or for long periods. School, doctor, daily routes and a neighbourhood that is pleasant in February too matter most. Daily life counts for more than the sea view.

Shared use

Several parties share a property, for example family or friends, and rent out the weeks nobody is there. That needs clear written agreements, a suitable legal form and a check of whether holiday letting is allowed in the building and the municipality.

A quiet retreat

A house or finca away from the coast for rest, garden and nature. Here we check access, water, electricity, internet and the status of the plot before we get to details such as the terrace.

What matters to you? A short test

Five questions, one tendency for the area. It is an orientation, not an expert opinion.

1. I want the weather to be …
2. My daily life …
3. I need …
4. I would most like to live …
5. What counts for me is …

The result is a rough orientation. It says nothing about prices, availability or the legal situation of individual properties.

The other Canary Islands too

Tenerife is not the only choice. A short overview of the other islands; details on property, rules and prices on request.

Gran Canaria

The largest city in the Canaries (Las Palmas), a port, an airport, universities and a south with the Maspalomas dunes. Very varied, from city life to mountain villages.

Lanzarote

Volcanic landscape with Timanfaya National Park, vineyards in La Geria and building in the style of César Manrique: low, white, in harmony with the landscape.

Fuerteventura

Long pale beaches, plenty of wind for kite and windsurfing, a dry climate and little building. An island for calm and open space.

La Palma

The green island with the Caldera de Taburiente and very dark night skies. When buying, check the zones of the 2021 volcanic eruption separately.

La Gomera

Small and quiet, with Garajonay National Park and laurel forest. Hiking and seclusion; reachable from Tenerife by ferry.

El Hierro

The smallest and westernmost island, a biosphere reserve, diving and a very quiet life. Little infrastructure, a lot of nature.

What to check around the property

A list that fits any location. Look on the spot, at different times of day.

  • Distance to the nearest doctor, pharmacy and supermarket, by car and on foot.
  • School or nursery if children are involved, and what the route is like.
  • Noise in the evening and at weekends: bars, road, flight path.
  • Sun and wind: when is the terrace in shade, how strong is the wind.
  • Internet: fibre or radio, ideally tested on the spot.
  • Parking, bus connection and distance to the airport.
  • Water, electricity and waste: who supplies, who bills, roughly what it costs.
  • Neighbours and community rules; for holiday letting also the municipality's requirements.
