Los Gigantes

Cliffs up to about 500 m high on the west coast; boats leave from here to watch whales and dolphins.

Choose reputable boat operators that follow wildlife rules.

What to expect

Los Gigantes on the west coast is known for its sheer cliffs (Acantilados de Los Gigantes), which rise several hundred metres out of the Atlantic. The place belongs to Puerto de Santiago and has a small harbour with marina, a promenade and viewpoints. Nearby are the dark beach of Playa de la Arena and small coves.

Weather and best time

The south-west is sunny and dry, usually mild and sheltered from the wind. The sea can still have a swell, and trips depend on the weather. Dolphins and whales can be watched here all year round; the sea area between Tenerife and La Gomera is known as a protected zone.

Getting there and practical

Los Gigantes is easy to reach from the motorway in the south and west. In summer parking around the harbour is scarce, so it pays to come early. Boat trips and rides to the coast below Masca start from here; ask the operator for timetables and departures.

Tips and notes

For whale watching choose reputable operators with a licence and a quality label (for example “Barco Azul”) and keep your distance from the animals; swimming with dolphins is not allowed. Take sun protection and a windbreaker, and get remedies beforehand if you are prone to seasickness. A sunset on the promenade is especially worthwhile.
