Masca
A mountain village in the Teno range with spectacular views and a famous gorge down to the sea.
Gorge access is regulated – check current conditions before travelling.
What to expect
Masca is a small mountain village in the Teno mountains in the north-west, at about 600 metres, between steep rock walls and terraced slopes. The houses cling to the mountain, and the view into the gorge (Barranco de Masca) towards the sea is among the best-known panoramas on the island. The hiking trail runs down through the gorge to the coast.
Weather and best time
The gorge is most pleasant in spring and autumn; in summer it is hot, and in rain the trail is dangerous. After storms or rockfall access may be closed.
Getting there and practical
The mountain road from Santiago del Teide to Masca is narrow and full of bends; oncoming traffic and coaches make passing tight, so drive carefully and allow enough time. Access to the gorge is regulated (registration or a permit may be required) – check the current rules with the island council (Cabildo). For the way back there are often boat connections from the coast, depending on weather and operator; clarify this before you descend.
Tips and notes
Sturdy shoes, water, sun protection and an early start are essential; even without a hike the view and the village are worth it. Do not descend in rain and do not dislodge stones. If you come by car, arrive early in the day, as the road and car parks fill up later. Bus connections are limited.
